The majority of Swatties aren't interested in scoring big on Wall Street. The
majority is interested in helping humanity, volunteering to fight global AIDS, or
fighting against the unjust actions of society, government, and big corporations.
Not surprisingly, many Swatties become lawyers (they are often accepted to the
best law schools in the country) or professors (Swarthmore ranks forth in raw
number of students who go on to obtain PhD's - NOTE: Swarthmore is tiny, and thus
ranks first when you consider percentage of students who end up with PhDs).
Career placement greatly depends on the state of the economy, but I can say that
many big name companies come to Swarthmore to recruit.
Yet you must remember what Swatties ultimately seek: Greater wisdom and an end
to world suffering (I am not kidding at all!).
Grad school and Peace Corps are the popular choices by far when it comes to
post-grad decision making.
Prestige? Ask anyone who has ever heard of Swarthmore and they will be impressed
by the name. However, people don't come to Swarthmore for its world reputation
(even though my class consists of students from more than 30 countries and all 50
states). They come to Swarthmore because they know it is a utopia for gifted and
passionate thinkers.
