For me, the best social stuff revolved around the fraternities. When I
was there, we had nearly 10 housed fraternities. Now (2003), there are, I
believe, only 3 housed fraternities. So the influence of the Greek system
on the campus has been minimized successfully by an overly-zealous,
diversity-driven (except in the direction of fraternies), too-sensitive
res ed administration. Off campus in Palo Alto and San Jose, the bar and
restaurant scene has exploded since I graduated, so there's a lot of good
stuff to do on weekends without having to drive to San Fran to find it.
As for dating, that's still a big joke on campus -- no one does it,
probably b/c of the mix of geeky students, small campus feel (read:
gossipy), and generally socially-maladjusted student body. But no
worries. Once you graduate, the Stanford mystique carries you far, and
the dating scene gets quite better.
