Quality of Life Survey
Full-time undergraduate program The only crime I experienced while I was a student was the theft of my bicycle, but that occurred near the train station in Palo Alto and not on campus. I once put out a relatively valuable object in the middle of the main plaza to see if anyone would take it, but no one did. People had a great deal of respect for each other on campus, and I think Stanford tried to instill this attitude among its students. Stanford offered a relatively diverse choice of housing and dining options for its undergraduates, which operated on a lottery system after your freshman year. Life on campus encouraged students to govern for themselves. If you chose to live on one of the theme houses, for example, the undergraduates hired (and had the power to fire) their own cooks. It was a pleasant, relaxing place to be, far from all the troubles of the world.
