Essays at Stanford are key, so you need to spend dozens of hours and do
serious soul-searching on these. If, when you're all finished, you're not
a little embarrassed with how deep and personal you got, then you haven't
gone far enough. The admissions office is looking for high-quality,
unique individuals who bring an interesting perspective to the class.
Diversity matters, but not necessarily in the traditional categories of
minority/women. They want people from different parts of the world,
athletes and musicians, champions in well-known as well as obscure
subjects, and those highly involved in their communities. Of course, high
test scores and GPAs matter, but every year, something like 4,000
valedictorians apply, and 80%+ of them still get rejected, so it's not
all about grades and scores.
