Being in the arts school, that's the primary prospective I get. We are
career-focused in a way that allows us to learn things while we're here. Some
places just want to teach you how to be the kind of actor that gets hired; here,
they want to teach how to be the kind of actor with ambitions of owning a theatre
company. It's just a different approach. They really emphasize juxtaposition.
Theatre goes with everything! My classmate flies out to Hollywood a couple times
a year for film auditions. On the other hand, I'm a Religion minor, and
interested in Playwrighting, so the professors have encouraged me to work on
adapting a CS Lewis book into a play - it's been great! By really letting us try
out all the things we're interested in, it helps in giving me perspective on what
I'm going to want to do after graduation. Also, SMU is very generous in setting
up it's theatre students with professional auditions starting sophomore year.
Anyone who wants to audition for summer work is welcome to. Also, SMU graduates
own one of the top reviewed theatres in Chicago so lots of kids go there to work.
When I first came to the department, I asked how many people "get work" upon
graduation. This is what they said: "It's split up into 3. About a third go
into the professional world as actors, and then another third go to grad school.
The last third just go on to do something altogether different." It's a neat
atmosphere to be in, because you know you're one of those three, and the
department knows that, too. It's nice to know that you are encouraged and guided
in whatever YOU decide.
