General admission to SMU is hassle free: the application involves
filling out the standard name, address, extra-curricular activities, and
submitting a teacher recommendation and an essay either of your choice
or following a yearly theme, such as "the role heritage plays in your
life". Fortunately, these files can be accessed and filled out off
their website, www.smu.edu, or sent in via snail mail. SMU looks for
the well rounded student - GPA doesn't have to be outstanding if your
extracurricular involvement looks good, and visa versa. The school will
offer you scholarship money based on GPA and SAT scores, though, so the
better you do, the less you pay. For those students matriculating with
a 1350 or over, and with a high-end GPA, are considered for the
Presendential Scholarship: a free ride that includes 1 fully paid year
abroad and 1 summer. Another tip: if applying to study within the
Meadows School of the Arts, be wary. It takes more than a great GPA to
get in here. There selectivity can be as slim as 6% a year! Come to
your auditions well-prepared and ready to improvise within your art
form. Meadows interviewers are looking for energetic and passionate
people who maintain other interests while still being dedicated to their
discipline.
