Social Life Survey |
|
The universities social life is stratified to say the least. There are
in-groups and out-groups abound. It is not unusual to find students who
drink, or who are drunk 4 days out of 7 in a given week. Albany
weekends generally start on Thursday and end Sunday, but Tuesday is
ladies night, which brings about a mid-week drinking fest. Many
students attend Albany from Long Island, generally they despise each
other, but end up drinking together because they have similiar
backgrounds and physical appearances. People associate with each other
based on pre-conceived notions and on their potential to attract women
to their group, it is almost primordial in essence.
There are about 10 bars located in a 1/2 mile radius in the mid-Albany
area. Many students have these bars in chronological order in reference
to their visitation. It is very fun to bar hop around town and run into
students who are pulling a D- in Geology 101, as many social barriers
are broken when students are allebriated. The social scene revolves
around drinking heavily and into the wee hours of the morning...or the
afternoon for some students. Many off-campus parties are thrown by the
frats/sororities and generally are just bars that are owned by
students. The downtown Albany area offers more bars/clubs, dancing,
many pizzerias - (some of the best pizza you will ever taste), which are
only a cab or bus ride away from any strategic point on or off-campus.
There are 3 malls located about 2 miles from each other right near the
uptown, major Albany campus, Crossgates mall is the biggest mall in NY
in terms of land.
Restaurant and eateries are very well maintained, and located throughout
Albany, which offer a variety of social settings, from punk to retro,
and everything in between. Many chinese take out restaurants and
pizzerias offer deliveries to your doorstep, or dormroom for a price
that has not been adjusted for inflation..in 20 years. Yes it is that
cheap!
The dating scene is well...a hook-up scene. Sex with out dating is the
norm, and finding a partner, either man or woman who is a reliable
person is very hard. The dating scene is a bust but the sex scene is a
blast. Not to discourage the intellegent readers of this piece, there
are good specimens to be found, just be selective of where you decide to
find a mate, the local bar scenes only leave about a 5% chance of
finding someone impressive enough to bring home to mom. The greek
population is about 25% in Albany, and are the major party throwers off
campus. The influence is not as tremendous as one may think, but if you
know where they live, and who the party throwers are, there is not any
problem in finding them.
Student favorites are as diverse as the population itself. Many
freshman...and seniors praying on freshman frequent the lamp post or
tramp post, which was featured on a Barbara Walters special during 97'
when UAlbany was voted the number one party school in the nation by the
Princeton Review. The Branch is another bar that is popular among
sophomores and juniors, Michaels is a bar/dance scene that is convenient
but frequented by jerks and sorority tramps. The Partridge Pub is a
relaxed atmosphere that plays older, popular music and is preferred by
those who are juniors/seniors looking for a place to have a few drinks
w/out the big Albany hassle associated with going out. Jillians is a
popular bar/club in downtown Albany which is frequented by
everyone..even the professors! The list can go on and on..there is just
that much to do in Albany! Museums, the Capital District, Saratoga
Springs and Lake George are with in an hour away from campus, as well as
many parks and places to enjoy gorgeous foilage in the fall or spring
time, natural beauty that upstate NY has to offer.
