Good housing options, both on and off campus. I lived 2 years in the
downtown dorms (Alumni Hall), 3 miles from campus. It was good to get
to "go home" at the end of the day, rather than staying uptown on the
concrete mall. Most students live off campus for junior & senior
years. Albany has an abundance of affordable housing. When I went (20
years ago), you could rent a great 3 BR house for about $450 per month.
For those without knowledge of upstate NY, keep in mind that it can be
COLD in Albany. The skies turn gray right after Halloween and don't
get blue again until around Easter. While we didn't get the snow like
Buffalo, we got our share of snow, ice and bitter winds. An urban
legend was that the uptown campus took its architecture from a school
in Arizona which had been optimized for wind movement. While I don't
think there was any facts behind the rumor, when you walked across the
campus in 10-below wind chill, it sure seemed believable. Note that
there are underground tunnels which you can use on campus in the
coldest weather.
