The University at Albany offers a rigid admissions process for
individuals who are entering the university from high school, or who are
entering into one of the many graduate/PhD programs. U.S News and World
report have ranked the university as "more selective" and Kiplingers
Financial have placed the University among one of the best values for a
college education. The admissions process involves filling out a SUNY
form, which allows an applicant to apply to many of the other SUNY
centers using the same application, increasing efficiency and
convenience. Graduate and PhD students must undergo admissions testing
as well as providing recommendations from employers or professors,
indicating the ability of the applicant. Some programs, specifically
the Sociology program, require a letter of intent, explaining what the
student wishes to acheive at the university.
Average SAT scores for highschool students range from about 1100 to
1230, which places it just below the competition for the ivy league, but
is greatly above the national average, which has a range of 1000-1030.
About 12% of entering secondary students are in the top 10% of their
respective class, receiving the title of presidential scholar. As with
most selective The average GMAT entrance score for the "school of
business" is approximately 560, which is on the higher end of most
universities, especially the public education sector. Many of these
individuals have 24-60 months of practical business experience beyond
that of undergraduate study. The program offers a diverse educational
structure involving case studies, lectures, speakers,and group
presentations, which are a nice blend, matching most prestigious
business schools. Getting in to the university is dependant upon the
desired program, the level of student or "flock" that is applying at the
corresponding time, and interviews with the department head or the
chairperson of the program. Interviews are not required but as always,
can certainly help the individual who is goal-oriented and capable of
explaining his/her motives in seeking out this university. The school
of Public Administration and Criminal Justice, located on the
Rockefeller Campus which is one of three locations that hold classes for
the university, currently ranks as one of the top colleges in the
aforementioned, areas of study. Selectivity for these programs are very
high, taking only the top students in regard to G.P.A, test scores,
letters of intent, strength of program, and recommendations.
Essays generally have the applicant answer such questions involving the
perserverance through adversity, how mentors have shaped their life and
helped them to become educated and responsible citizens, and what they
hope to acheive by attending thie university.
Transfer students face a different set of rules, in comparison to the
rest of the applicants. A G.P.A of 2.5 is the minimum for consideration
to the university. The Business school requires a transfer minimum
G.P.A of 3.0 since the amount of applications received are so numerous.
