People make groups of friends through sports, clubs, greek life (greek
houses are near South Campus), classes. There is a significant number
of students who grew up in Buffalo and live at home. They are a little
removed from the UB nightlife. UB is pretty "diverse", meaning there
are a large number of many ethnicities ... but you'll rarely see them
mixing together.
The bars are located in a few places. Main Street is the UB nightlife
seen, and is within stumbling distance of South Campus and the
apartments around it. PJs is the frosh hang out. Greeks go to the
Steer. There's also Third Base, Molly's, Broadway Joe's, and that bar
whose name always changes. The other places are near Buff State and
downtown Buffalo (Chippewa Street), which are also pretty solid.
The Greek Life is a respectable size, but not huge. Another dynamic at
UB is Upstate vs. Downstate. This a distinct line, which separates the
NYC boys and Jewish girls from "Lon Gisland" from the "hicks" from
upstate.
