Social scene was good-great if you lived in the right area. Obviously the
on-campus dorms that are the most fun are the frat-heavy ones (Newing
Hall, in my day), and the most study-friendly are the artist/alternative
lifestyle-friendly Dickinson and pretty much any of the others. Plenty of
frat parties off campus 3-4 nights a week with $2-$3 covers (1997), and
considering the endless supply of cheap beer and $2 taxi home that is the
deal of a lifetime. That scene gets old around mid-sophomore year, but
there's always a kegger somewhere in the dorms. Have your own for the
most fun, but it is illegal, so watch it. Over 21, there's a one-block
stretch that's home to about 7 or 8 bars that the entire student body
attacks 3-4 nights a week. There wass almost no "school spirit" when I
was there, but now that they're Div 1 (?) who knows. You don't have to go
Greek (I didn't), but of course it helps a lot in most instances, so if
you can afford it, and handle rushing/pledging without dropping the ball
in class, it's probably a good idea. I have known a few guys who could
NOT handle all that and wound up losing scholarships or being booted out
altogether, so don't do anything stupid.
