The social atmosphere at RIT is very unlike other colleges because it
attracts a specific type of student that is very academically oriented.
The campus is 'dry' in that there is no alcohol allowed in the
dormitories, and the Intstitute is very hard on alcohol violations. If
you are looking for a place to party, or for a big sports school, this
is not the place for you. Many students come to RIT because they assume
that they will have an environment that is condusive to the rigorous
workload that they are tackling. There is one bar that is within walking
distance, and several that are approximately 10 minutes away. RIT is
just outside of the City of Rochester, so there are many restaurants
(including excellent asian/indian/italian), a few clubs, and 2 major
music venues. The Blue Cross Arena (formerly the War Memorial) is the
largest music venue, and Rochester has a professional soccer team, as
well as minor league baseball and hockey. Water Street Music Hall is
also ~15 minutes from RIT, where many medium and smaller sized bands
often perform. The Greek system at RIT is absolutely laughable...so if
you're thinking of joining a fraternity or sorority, let me save you the
trouble. The greek life at RIT is a continually failing attempt to make
RIT life something that it isn't. On-campus, there are a variety of
programs happening all the time, but the general student populace have
never seemed interested. RIT hockey is the one small spark of school
spirit that students really seem to get into, and for $2-$3, you can
experience a racous evening of RIT comradary. Other student favorites
include the Brick City Festival in the fall since there is normally a
medium-sized performer/comedian, and the occassional guest speaker (Rev.
Jesse Jackson, George Tenant of the CIA, and Ben Stein are recent
speakers). There is little to no programming focused on upper-class
students (all that I have mentioned is freshman-oriented). On a final
note, it should be understood that RIT has a male to female ratio of
approximately 70% males to 30% females. However, it should also be known
that Rochester is a happening city, and that 5 other colleges (SUNY
Geneseo, University of Rochester, Nazareth College, St. John Fischer,
and SUNY Brockport) with different social atmospheres are within driving
distance.
