The quality of life at RIT is exceptional. Their food services are top-
notch, and most of their facilities are new and cutting-edge. The
technology at RIT is constantly upgraded, and the campus has undergone
an extensive beautification process that has decreased the traditionally
dreary 'brick city' atmosphere. All of the dormitories were renovated
between 1998 and 2001. The campus setup is excellent, as it is
approximately 1/3 of a mile between the dormitories and the academic
buildings. RIT is located in a suburb of Rochester, so it does not
suffer from the cramped city atmosphere that many schools offer. The
campus is large and isolated, making it one of the safer schools that I
have ever visited. The crime at RIT is extremely mild and occurs at a
very low-frequency. It is perfectly safe to walk around alone at night.
There are currently 5 different dining facilities available to students
on-campus. All offer high-quality food and excellent selection,
including vegetarian and vegan dishes. The dormitories house
approximately 90% freshman students, and 10% upperclassmen.
Upperclassmen normally live in the on-campus apartment complexes, or off-
campus. There is a shortage of on-campus housing at RIT, forcing many
students to live off-campus. Parking is free for all students at RIT,
and the parking lots are adequate. RIT has one of the fastest internet
connections that I have ever experienced. On-campus transfer of files
can reach up to 5 megabytes per second (5000 KBps), and recently the on-
campus to off-campus transfer capability has been capped at 64 KBps, I
assume to try to curb illegal file sharing.
