I personally had a very negative experience with the career services department.
My career aspirations at the time where to break into the Consulting industry.
Therefore, my first steps where to try my best to secure an internship in a
corporate environment to position myself for a full-time position upon
graduation. Career Services, unfortunately did not turn up any credible leads.
I ended up securing a position by surfacing my own leads and pursuing them.
Sure enough, when my last year had arrived, I was then looking for a full-time
position with a consulting firm. At that point, I was told by Career Services
that "Consulting firms only recruit at Top Tier / Ivy League Schools... you
should try something else." At that point I knew I was on my own and had to
build and capitalize on my own network. Eventually I did and landed a role in a
Big 5 Consultancy, no thanks to Career Services.
