The admissions process at Occidental impressed me when I visited as a
second semester high school senior. Early in the morning I had a tour
at UCSB, and came to Oxy in the afternoon. The difference I felt
between the two universities was monumental: at UCSB the application
process was discussed as one that filters out numerous applications if
the students gpa is below a certain minimum. Comments like these made
me realize that at a large school such as UCSB I would literally be an
anonymous number. At Oxy my interviewer talked about how applications
are carefully looked at, and character is evaluated more than simply the
numbers. I think Oxy takes into greater consideration the essay than
most other schools. This is representative of Oxy in general - it is a
school that attempts to encourage and aid the individual student.
