New York is pretty safe... and the parts where NYU is centered is very
safe.
The residences halls are basically apartments. You never really meet
anybody.
THe campus is the city and the nucleus is Washington Square Park. NYU
draws a lot of its energy from the energy in that park. I think it is
honorary NYU property at this point (to the disdain of permanent
Villagers, I'm sure...)
The dorm food is horrific, but after Freshman year nobody really uses food
plans, anyway.
The buses to the outer dorms (those at the Seaport, Lafayette Street,
Greenwich hotel, and some uptown locations) are irritating and make for a
long, crowded commute -- b ut at least they're free.
The dorms can be palatial (read: Water Street) or tiny (read: most of the
other dorms) and are generally expensive (5,000$-11,000$ a semester, w/o
meals).
A lot of upperclassmen find their own apartments. But beware! This is
not an easy task! A friend of mine has spent the past 2 months looking
for an apartment, without avail!
