Montreal is an almost spotlessy clean and very safe highly sophisticated and
cosmopolitan city; by North American standards it is exceptional in all of these
regards.
Its English-French dual personality adds an additional, and invariably quite
interesting
and even more diversifying twist. On campus room and board was passable as far
as
these things go (!), but very few students wanted to stay in the dorms for very
long
because the rest of the city offered such magnificent and affordable options
(this was
certainly the case 20 years ago, if slightly less so today) The "plateau"
neighborhood
bordering McGill to the east is full of great apartments, has wha could only be
described
as an ample and very vibrant nightlife (!) and a broad array of ethnic shops and
great
restaurants for many budgets. To the west, in the most "anglo" part of the
city, there are
also great apartments - often more for the money than the "plateau" - though the
social/
club/restaurant and shopping scene there is also less diverse. A significant
fact of life in
Montreal is, of course, dark, snowy, dreary freezing cold and quite long
winters. I got
used to it, personally; its the kind of place where one is especially well
advised to find
someone warm to snuggle up with. I also learned that the brutality of the
winters makes
for incredibly lively springs - that certain day in the Spring when the weather
breaks, the
chic black clothing come off, and all the beautiful people suddenly turn out in
the streets
scantily clad and in force was always memorable. Summers too are marvelous,
chock full
of film, humor and jazz festivals, the Canadian formula one for glitterati
watchers and/or
racing freaks, etc. Should you decide to stay at McGill for a summer for a few
courses, as
I did, I guarantee you it will be memorable. McGill's campus, nestled on the
northern
approaches to Mount Royal, after which the city is named, is pretty, as one
could expect
from Canada's oldest university. The facilities are more than ample; it is not
an
ostentatious looking or feeling place but, rather, quite reserved in tone.
