The admission process at that time was quite different from the many US universities I had applied to while in high school because it was based only on "the numbers". This system was excellent because it was entirely transparent; either you met the numerical requirment or you didn't; no mamby pamby grey area (!). So, the advice for getting in: make the numbers!
