The Greek and Independent Living system is large. When I went to MIT
there were 34 fraternities, which is a huge number for an undergrad
population of 5 or 6 thousand. There are ample sports, activities, and
living group activies (read parties) for socializing. A lot of MIT
classes are also largely based on teamwork, especially in the junior and
senior years, so you also have the opportunity to meet people in your
classes. I made most of my friends on the crew team, which is a great
place to meet people freshman year (about 70 freshman row on the novice
crews each year). The crew team also has a no cut policy which gives
even the most uncoordinated person a chance to pick up a sport.
Cambridge and Boston both have tons of bars, restaurants, and nightlife.
Many people come to the Boston area and never leave, or, they spend the
rest of their life trying to get back. All in all, MIT was a superior
experience for me in all aspects.
