The Fraternity, Sorority, and Independent Living Group situation at MIT
is great. Definitely make an effort to explore these groups. They
provide support and a home away from home. I was a member of one of
these houses and so was provided with an open kitchen and sit-down
dinner 6 nights a week, plus prepared lunch M-F. Many houses even have
cooks. I am not sure how on campus dining is because I rarely had to
use the cafeterias. You will have unparalleled opporunity for athletic
participation at MIT, sometimes even if you do not have experience in
the sport. MIT has more intercollegiate athletic teams than most other
schools. They are not all extremely competitive (although some teams are
division one) but that can actually be a benefit to the majority of
students who were not superstar highschool athletes. The neighborhood is
safe, but it is in a city, so there are some mishaps (but they are
rare). The most common crime is stolen bikes.
