Applications were done on paper back then. You can do them on-line now
at web.mit.edu or print one out. The interview can definitely help you
since it's your only person-person interaction with anyone in the
admission's process. MIT is super selective, it's not enough to have a
1600 on the SATs or lots of community service, because everyone who is
applying has those kind of credentials. Focus on getting strong
recommendations from your teachers that highlight what makes you
special. Sports and other extra-curricular activities will help
especially if they are leadership related (president of class, captain
of the football team). It's more important that there is consistency
and dedication in the activities that you do (quality vs. quantity).
It doesn't hurt to be #1 in your class although that won't separate you
since 60% of applicants are valedictorians of their high schools.
