Rogers Park is not the nicest area around. However, the campus itself
is beautiful and the university has been working on beautifying and
updating the area. I should mention that my comments are limited to
the lakeshore campus.
On campus housing was varied from single sex dorms, to apartment style
to communal living arrangements. While the building assignments have
changed, I do believe that they still offer an assortment of choices to
their students. Also, there are many apartments available off campus
for those students who would rather not pay the high cost of on-campus
housing.
The dining facilities could use some work. I got off the meal plan as
fast as I could. There's one main dining room with cafeteria style
offerings and then there's the Rambler Room which is often referred to
as the commuter dining room where you could get burgers or pizza, etc.
Meal plan cards were also accepted at the Rambler room. There were
also a few food carts scattered throughout the campus for a quick bite
or a soda before class.
The gym and track were great amenities. The gym was free to students
and included an indoor track, nautilus equipment, basketball courts and
more. Many students took advantage of the great gym. There were other
things offered within the gym but those are the only items I took
advantage of.
Security officers were around campus and there didn't seem to be a lot
of on-campus crime. However, parts of Rogers Park were not so safe and
I wouldn't recommend walking around alone (especially if you're a
woman). There was a service available during evening to late night
hours offering students rides to/from activities and their housing.
There was a guideline of how far they could go but the security
officers tried to work with the students in that regard. They were
very friendly and always there to help.
