In truth, I applied to Loyola because an admissions committee member
from Dartmouth informed me that if I want (read "need") scholarship
money, I should apply to a midwestern Jesuit university. He indicated
that such a school would jump to give a smart kid for the NE with an
underprivileged background (but not a minority) money to attend their
school unlike any "Ivy" school. He was right. I applied. An
admissions counselor flew to New York to take me and my mother out to
brunch and to answer any questions I had. They provided a generous
package and I went to school that fall without having even visited the
campus. The application (as I recall) was fairly basic. There weren't
any essay requests beyond the norm that you'll find across the board.
By the way, it was 1988. Your form didn't allow me to put in a date
prior to 1990.
