At KSU, it is fun to be in a house, but not at all necessary to have a
good social circle (I would not say the same for KU). The Greek system
is large and heavily populated, but independents are not ostricized
from college society. Manhattan has a bar district called "Aggieville"
that has an ever-changing assortment of bars, restaurants and other
watering holes, which offer live music and entertainment often. And the
beauty of it - they're all in one place, so no driving around when
drinking, and they're very close to lots of housing as well as campus,
so lots of folks actually walk to the bars (both during the day and at
night/on the weekends). Personal favorites were Scoreboard (sports bar
that recently underwent a great makeover and now features hardwood
floors and lots of big-screens) and Rock-a-Belly Bar & Deli (home to
the summer beer and great sandwiches like the Belly Buster).
The improvement of the KSU football team has created a terrific
atmosphere on campus in the fall, and football weekends fill the town
with purple-clad alumni and fanatic football fans. Students either love
or hate football, and stand in (they never sit) a rowdy student
section. The women's volleyball team and the track team are also
competitive in the Big 12 as well as nationally.
