Social Life Survey
Full-time undergraduate program Social life at Hopkins is characterized the the "Hopkins 500", which is the 500 or so students who actually go out. Well, it's probably more than that, but there are definitely a number of students who elect to study and spend time in the library day in and day out all week and on the weekends. For those who do go out and socialize, there's nearby Charles Village with several blocks of restaurants and shops, and the Inner Harbor only 2 miles away. About 30% of students participate in the Greek system. There are about 10 fraternities, although it varies year to year on who actually has their charter, and 4 sororities. Of the sororities, Phi Mu is known as the home of preppy, high- maintenance girls. It is a very selective group and if you're a female and not in it, don't expect a Phi Mu to speak to you. Alpha Phi is recognized as the most down to earth group of girls and includes everyone from athletes to Physics majors. Theta is almost exclusively a sorority for varsity athletes and their best friends. Kappa Kappa Gamma has the reputation of taking all the girls who didn't get accepted into the other sororities, usually Alpha Phi. Of the fraternities, Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike) is popular for their parties and their members are thought to be among the best looking fraternity guys on campus. Pike has its own rowhouse. AEPi is a Jewish fraternity, although it occasionally allows in non-Jewish guys who are good friends with the members. The AEPi guys are known for throwing good parties and being excellent dates. If you go on a date with an AEPi guy, expect a nice dinner before heading to the swanky bar at the 13th Floor in the Belvedere. It's the standard AEPi date. Phi Psi is the fraternity that Michael Bloomberg belonged to when he was a student at Hopkins in the 1960s. Hopefully the organization had a better reputation during those times because now its members are known as the biggest pot smokers on campus. They throw the legendary spring party - the Phi Psi 500 - annually. Fiji is the jock frat with mostly soccer and lacrosse players. They throw the Fiji Islander, an outdoor party after the Homecoming lacross game, in the President's Garden each year. The two closest bars to campus are Charles Village Pub, known as CVP, and PJ's Pub. CVP is a smoky, laid-back bar that serves excellent $3.50 hamburgers. PJ's is a small step up from CVP with a pool table, but is equally as smoke filled. On the weekends, CVP tends to attract everyone but athletes. All the athletes head to PJ's.
