Although matters have improved somewhat since my graduation, to this day
Harrisonburg does not provide the JMU community with a great deal of
dining and bar/club options. The campus and off-campus life, however,
more than make up for what the community lacks. Drinking and parties
are a way of life on and off campus, although recent crack-downs in on-
campus parties have driven most of the activity off-campus. Although I
went to my fair share of parties, I also took advantage of the many
options that were offered to students who were not interested in the
party scene. Greek life at JMU is active, but there is a very active
non-Greek life as well, which promoted a large array of activities
during the week and on the weekends. Community service is also a huge
part of the campus culture, with almost every organization donating some
of its time to the local or campus communities.
