Virtually no greek system. People in the TV/R/Film program really spend
the bulk of their time running the TV and radio stations which get major
ratings in Tompkins County. You will alwasy see people running around
with a camera or editing or scouting locations. There are fewer bars
today than when I went, but when you count the bars in College Town
(Cornell's campus) it is pretty bar heavy. At one point Ithaca had more
bars per square mile than any other college town. Due to the extreme
conditions of the winter people pretty much truck downtown and hang all
night so that when they walk home in the freezing cold they don't feel
much. I did have a lot of fun partying, but it never seemed to get out
of control like at Penn State. No riots, burning the town, kids dying.
Ithaca has a bit of a mellow pary vibe to it. More Grateful Dead than
Marily Manson. However, it is not a "granola" school. A ton of people
from Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester go to Ithaca. The
restaurants are really impressive given the location. The vegatarian
Moosewood restaurant is in Ithaca. (Nationally recognized vegatarian
rest.) Cornell has the Restaurant School which is a nice place to eat.
I did feel a bit removed from the rest of the world when I was there.
It's somewhat cut off. I used to call it Brigadoone and was convinced
it disappeared when I went home. I have gone back several times for
weekend getaways since I graduated many years ago. I still adore the
countyside and the "vibe" of the place. There are a couple of bars that
are legends outside of the area...one is called the Rongovian Embassy. I
will never forget that place! As a whole, Ithaca provides several
different opportunities for dining, drinking, recreation. Given Cornell
is right there you don't have to rely only on your school population for
entertainment. I found that to be a big bonus. I spent a lot of time
in College Town. All in all, Ithaca has a ton of history, it's
beautiful, the school is phenominal for TV/R (as well as music, theatre
and physical therapy...they are nationally recognized programs...Ithaca
started as a music school decades ago) and the energy of the place is
really supportive. It's a complete package as far as I am concerned.
The only thing that is dicey is the weather, but if you are a fan of
winter then you could not top it.
