Quality of Life Survey
Full-time undergraduate program Quality of life: Bloomington is a wonderful college town! In, fact, I would have gone to IU on the atmosphere alone. It's simply fantastic. I'll break it down for you: Housing: I stayed on campus all four years. You can't beat the convenience and IU has (and is building more) very attractive apartments/suites/other options for undergrads. There's lots of off- campus housing, but if you want to stay close to campus most of it is in pretty bad shape. As in lots of old, rotting houses with sunken floors. It's pretty bad. If you can afford it, there is nice off- campus housing to be found. You'll just need to travel a bit. And Bloomington has a terrific city busline. Look for housing on the busline and you'll be fine. I had a car for three years and still ended up taking the bus to the mall, work, etc. Campus: Gorgeous. IU always ranks high among "campus beauty" surveys and it is well-deserved. In good weather, hundreds of students will be lounging along the Jordan River reading a book or having a picnic in the Arboretum near the Main Library. Very walkable campus. Which is good, because traffic is awful on the few roads that do run through the campus. Facilities: Awesome dining options: my friends at Purdue, U of M, Illinois, Michigan State, and others are really jealous when they come to visit. Great librairies, and IU ranked #1 for "most wired campus" according to TIME recently. I didn't appreicate all the computer labs until after I graduated! Unbelievable performing arts venues: the MAC hosts excellent student-run operas, plays, and ballets. The IU Auditorium gets Broadway shows, which students can see for little money (or for free if you volunteer as an usher-well worth it!). Everything from Broadway to Colin Powell to Indigo Girls to famous Classical artists to Bill Cosby to Red Hot Chili Peppers, cultural dance gourps...they all come to IU. John Mellencamp has been known to roll into campus and give free concerts in Dunn Meadow. Crime and safety: I felt very safe. There is a safety escort that will pick you up anywhere if you need. Personally, I never used it. Just be smart.
