Quality of life during my freshman and sophomore years were typical.
Everybody hates living in the dorms, but that's college life. The
freshman women's dorms were more than 100 years old so there was no
central air or heating. We had radiators that clanged in the middle of
the night, and we had to keep a metal bowl of water on top of it to keep
the air moist in the winter, but I think they have refurbished since the
early days. Howard is located along the Georgia Avenue corridor of
Washington, DC and in the historic Shaw district. This is a
predominately black area, but there are many black owned businesses, and
there is a huge sense of community. The people care about their
neighborhood. There is crime, but it is the city, it comes along with
the territory. I found that if you speak to people when they speak to
you, respect the neighborhood, and get to know the neigbors it makes
life at Howard even more memorable.
There is plenty of housing on or off campus. I watched the campus
facilities improve over the years I was there.
