Being admitted to Howard University had to be one of the most trying
times of my life. I had decided that was the university that I wanted
to attend, and I was not going to allow anything to get in the way. I
had spoken with alumni and my counselor about best practices for
admissions into my 1st choice. I applied for early admissions as I was
advised, and my application was in my opinion flawless. I sent my
application in November, and I did not receive a decision until July.
There were no interviews. My essays we real. I have been told that I
am an excellent writer by many of my peers, so I believe that my heart
goes into an essay, and those reading it and pick up on how I feel. It
was a long waiting process for me, but I am glad that I got in no matter
how late I received an acceptance. My SAT score was not the best up on
graduation from high school, so they heavily weighed a lot of other
things, and I made the cut. Patience is a virtue in the whole
admissions process, and I learned that. I believe it has made me a
better person, and I did not look back. I will say that if anyone is
thinking about attending the university, exposure is the key. If you
take that extra step to get in (i.e. attending summer programs, speaking
with current students, and alumni) things will definitely be easier for
you.
