The social life is really bad here, unless you make a concerted effort
to have one. The problem is that the nature of Harvard students is that
they are extremely busy all the time, and even finding time to talk with
my own roommate is difficult. Some of my best conversations have been at
3am. Consequently, the dating scene is also unique: people don't
casually date here. They are either married couples (living together and
doing everything together but shutting friends out) or they just
randomly hook up at parties or with friends. Drinking is a big component
of the social life for most people, as at any other school, but
especially here, because it helps lessen the social awkwardness. Harvard
does not really have a strong Greek life but social clubs such as the
infamous "final clubs" are a way that some people define their
identities, and they have an increasingly noticed presence on campus.
For some people, joining these all-exclusive and very expensive social
clubs provides a social outlet for partying. For others, finals clubs
are unnecessarily elitist and silly. You either love them or you hate
them.
