A key feature since the 1930s have been the "Houses", smaller "colleges"
on the Oxford/Cambridge model. I understand that since the 1990s
assignment to houses has become more random, and I don't know if this
has diluted the houses' individual characters (the jock house, the nerd
house, the preppy house, the gay house, etc.) Housing ranges from
excellent (private bedrooms, and a living room, with fireplace, and
bathroom shared by three seniors) to adequate (cinder block high-rise.)
Harvard Square is generally safe; Cambridge and nearby Boston are
vibrant college towns. A good number of students who come from
elsewhere (which is to say, New York) decide to stay in greater Boston
after graduation.
