OCS has good resources, but the biggest thing is the name. You will almost
always get an interview just because you went to Harvard. I'm almost positive
that I wouldn't have gotten my first job without having gone to Harvard. I
didn't have that much experience in the field (journalism) but got interviewed
and a job offer. While I was working, I can remember numerous times when editors
made fun of hapless soon-to-be grads who would call up asking about their resume
submission, and saying something like "But I went to Columbia." So what, was the
editors' line, suggesting that journalism is a hard-knocks career where elitism
doesn't get you anywhere. But I KNOW that I got my interview b/c of Harvard (I,
of course, didn't call in and say "well, I went to Harvard," the resume did the
work itself).
Finally, the alumni network is, unaparalleled. In my experience: 1) people who
meet each other during school keep in touch very well, especially in big cities
like NYC or San Fran and 2) alumni that you didn't know at t school are always
willing to help.
I didn't go through on-campus recruiting for I-banking or consulting, but a lot
of people I know did. Seems like they all landed at top firms.
