In 1979 the process was SAT, transcript, teacher letter of reference,
essay. All or some candidates were invited to an interview local
to them. Harvard was and remains very highly selective. At least two
of SAT, GPA, extra-curriculars, athletics, family, or story had better
be exceptional, and SAT and GPA must be very good.
Harvard valued diversity before diversity was cool, and they want it in
much more than skin color. A good essay on how being raised by wolves
in Montana inspired the candidate to make a solo rowboat cruise around
the world to raise money to teach lepers to sing can go a long way.
