I applied early admissions but did not make it, but then made it in the
regular admissions cycle. I came from a public school in a smaller
state where historically about one student every year or two would get
into Harvard. I had killer test scores, GPA and activities so to be
honest, I expected to get in. I think the reason I didn't get in early
was 1) they probably always knew I would accept a regular admissions
offer and 2) I think I came off as arrogant and a college-admissions
robot during the interview. The interview was with with an alum in a
nearby large city (Pittsburgh), and I was just too enthusiastic about
selling myself. Now that I'm an alum and I know people who do
interviews, I know that the best thing to do is just to be as
interesting as possible rather than a world-beater. Harvard is full of
world-beaters -- it's also full of very interesting people -- and
interviewers I think tend to focus on the latter. In the interviews,
try to talk about what really interests you and why.
