Social Life Survey
Full-time Information Technology There is a little bar down the street with cheap beer, a favorite for after classes for the late night students, getting out on 10:30 PM. Wednesday's is DJ music, no cover charge. A nice little place to unwind and drink a little too much... :) When thinking of school sponsored social activities, keep in mind, it is a small school, so don't expect the quantity of things you'd find a major university. The school has approx. 20 clubs the function on- campus, but that's about all I know about it. Between the classes, exams and full-time work, I did not have time for much else. They do a yearly retreat, free of charge, for new (incoming) students, sponsored by the school, at a mountain ranch above Capistrano in Orange County. The retreat is nice, but alot of work. I was not new to college, but quickly realized that this retreat was designed for those who are. Three day (over a weekend) retreat, was broken into sessions and run a strict time schedule. Session included: Studying Habiits, How to be a successful student, etc, etc... For team building exercises they created 6 teams. Each team was responsible for cooking a meal for the rest of the group. On most nights there is free coffee offered for evening student by the Student Body. Hmm, lastly, it does not exactly fit in this section, but should be mentioned none the less. So here goes: It seems to me that this entire university is geared toward first-time college students. I say this because it is alot different than what I experienced when I earned my first degree in a major University here in Los Angeles. Their whole system is very monitored & strict. Attendance is taken for every class, everyday. If you do not swipe in at the bigging of class, you will hear from your academic advisor. If you swipe in late (tardy), you will hear from your advisor. Your advisor sets your class schedule, what classes and in what order you should take them for you. Your schedule (you pick the times), must be approved by your advisor. They even have an alarm bell, to tell you when classes officially start, stop and when it's break time. Very strict and very structured!! Personally, I found it insulting and did not appreciate being treate like a child. But I suppose, it would have been helpful if I was coming straight out of high school.
