Blitz figures prominently in social life, too. If you meet someone,
all you ahve to remember is their first and last name and then you can
look them up on blitz and email them the next day. The ease of
connection is phenomenal.
The school social life is very campus-centered. Students spend weekend
nights either at parties at Greek houses or other campus groups. All
parties are within walking distance. And if you have a couple of
drinks, then you are warm enough to walk the 10 minutes even it is only
15 degrees outside. about 80% of guys pledge a fraternity and they are
small houses and they are pretty cliquey. More of the ladies are
independent and their houses are all more diverse and larger, with
pledge classes of 40 or so and only six-seven sorority houses,
nationals being: Tridelt, Kappa and Alpha Xi Delta.
There are a couple of bars in town, literally like three or four, I
guess, all attached to restaurants. the best is Murphey's Tavern on
the Green. These bars are cool hang outs for the seniors.
Underclassmen usually stick to parties for their drinking and there is
a lot of drinking at Dartmouth. Fraternity boys play massive
touraments of "Beer Pong"--this sometimes seems to be a way for them to
have a party and entice beautiful women to their house but not actually
have to talk or dance with them. Girls play beer pong, too, and some
get very good at it. There are all types of people at Dartmouth and
those who span several stereotypes, too. You could have a manicure on
Friday after class, play pong Friday night till 3 am, and then get up
Saturday morning to go hike the hills of New Hampshire. This
combination would not be strange in the slightest.
All students are also very interested in different events around campus
like plays and symphony concerts and the many lecturers and performers
that Dartmouth brings to campus. Very often students go to two or
three different events on a given night--weeknight or weekend. And
Wedensday nights are also the night to party during the week because
greek houses have their meetings on Wednesday nights and a cappella
groups give concerts at 11:30 in different houses each Wednesday.
Other than a specifically planned event, students don't go out durign
the week other than on Wednesday nights. Some students sort of fall
off the deep end their senior year and want to play 100 nights straight
of pong, but when their grades suffer, they come to their senses--
usually.
The cool thing abotu attending such a prestigious academic institution
with such a strong community and social life is that everyone there is
interested in so many things. And they are interested in them beyond a
superficial level. So, depending on the situation, you might be
dancing to Madonna at one moment and discussing what your prof said
about Proust the next. The melange is incredible and very vibrant.
