BA There are several places to eat in town, but Hanover is a small town, and while the options are ample for most, this is perhaps not the place for someone who views malls or Manhattan as central to life. Fraternities and Sororities provide a large portion of the social life on campus, though the administration has been fighting it for over a decade, as administrations love to do. There are, however, many other outlets for social activity. One fun option is called Collis Miniversity, a series of courses run through the student center. Classes are not for credit, and meet once a week. Students can take such things as ballroom dancing, guitar playing, beer making, wine tasting, and massage. Boston is about 2 hours away by car, and New York and Montreal are about 4 hours away by car. Dating life at Dartmouth has advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, there are thousands of smart, motivated, well-rounded peers on a small campus. Also, Dartmouth students, perhaps along with Princeton students, have perhaps the best reputation in the Ivies as being good, friendly people. I always felt that there were many people that I would love to get to know as friends if only I had the time. While Dartmouth's quarter system is absolutely wonderful in terms of academics, the tendency for everyone to take a term abroad, coupled with the required sophmore summer term (a great experience??my friends from home seemed to feel sorry for me that I was going to school in the summer, but I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else) and the compensatory off-term means that friends and significant others often are on different residency plans, and if they are not in the same year, can miss each other for quite some time. Dartmouth's isolation works both for and against meeting people. Having no big city nearby means that students socialize with each other, and the Dartmouth community feels very much like a close familiy. On the other hand, of course, that means that the only people around are likely to be fellow students.
