Social Life Survey |

The social life at Dartmouth is an interesting and controversial topic,
mainly because the social life is mostly greek. And not in the sense
that only greeks get to party (because all parties are open), but in
the sense that the greeks do fund and organize most of the parties. Chi
Gam usually has a Friday or Saturday night "DJ and kegs". Other houses
have a few unthemed parties as well, while others may only throw one
party a term, but it is a traditional themed party. The Tabard always
has the very famous Disco Inferno; Sigma Nu is know for its early 80's
party, and the EKT sorority has a Wild Things animal print
event. "Pong" is a word you will hear at this school frequently because
it is the number one drinking game, played in greek basements and the
occasional off-campus house. Basically, it is ping-pong, except that
there are beers on the table and you want to hit the ball into your
opponent's beer so that s/he has to drink it. There are several
variations on this, but that is the body of it.
There are no clubs in Hanover, and the neigboring town of Lebanon has a
club or two but students don't go there because they are too far away
and they are populated by sketchy locals ("townies" as we
affectionately call them).
There are a number of great restaurants in and around Hanover. Panda
House, serving Chinese food and sushi is a favorite both for sitting
and taking out. Molly's has a great slice 'n salad combo and their
Chocolate Martini's, if you are old enough to drink (they WILL card),
are well-worth a stop. EBA's, (everything but anchovies) is a
traditional pizza joint (try the breadsticks!), but C & A's brick oven
pizza is better. Those looking to spend money can go to Bon Gustaio,
one of my favorite Italian restaurants in the entire world. Out of town
pricey joints include Jesse's Steakhouse, Simon Pearce, and Le Poule A
Dente.
Every term at Dartmouth, there is a campus wide party week. For fall,
it is Homecoming. This is a good time to go apple-picking, carve a
pumpkin, drink cider (hard or not - your choice), or hike the White
Mountains. The day before the Homecoming game, there is an enormous
bonfire that everyone goes to. Winter has Winter Carnival, which sends
students to the slopes. Spring is welcomed by Green Key, where greek
houses host bands and students enjoy the defrosting of the campus. This
is also when the school hosts a Pow Wow, which is a very cool cultural
event. Summer is Tube Stock, where a band plays on the banks of the
Connecticut while students float about in the river in tubes or on
constructed rafts.
Other ways to socialize include any number of organizations from the
Dartmouth Outing Club to ethnic groups to the Fencing Club.
Other events include seeing one of the campuses student run a cappella
groups perform (especially the Cords - they are superb and have been on
television) to going to see an event at the Hopkins Center - whether it
is Dar Williams, Wynton Marsalis, Run DMC, pro wrestling, a play, or
the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra.
Basically, there is no shortage of fun, entertaining things to do at
Dartmouth.
