Quality of Life Survey |
| BA |
The quality of life at Dartmouth is incredibly high for anyone who likes a
natural
setting. I had remembered the Dartmouth setting as a kind of eutopia, and when I
went back for my 10th reunion, I was worried that I'd my memory of the place had
grown more perfect than it could possibly be. But the mountains and the river
and
the woods still seemed to me more beautiful than I'd remembered. The campus is
fairly small, set on the Connecticut river in the wooded mountains, and is bliss
for
anyone who loves the outdoors. Students can visit college-owned cabins, go
canoeing on the river, take skiing as a P.E. credit, or read on the green amid
games of frizbee.
Housing varies, from gorgeous old buildings with rooms that have working
fireplaces to newer dorms that are strictly utilitarian. But even the dorms that
students view as being very far removed from the center of campus are probably
less than a 15-minute walk from any classroom.
Dining also varies and changes. One positive element is that unlike some
schools, Dartmouth returned to students (or parents) any unused money from
meal plans, or at least they did when I was on campus.
When I first arrived at Dartmouth students often left doors to dorm rooms open
when not at home. Now I think most students close and lock their doors when
they leave. However, the general environment is on the whole extremely safe.
