Quality of life at Dartmouth is tops. I can't emphasize how great the
lifestyle truly is. It is a very healthy-feeling place, people are
outside during all seasons, even in winter when Winter Carnival,
skiing, snowboarding, hockey games, etc., are all going on. Housing has
never been a problem. As a freshman, you hope to not get placed in the
River dorms, which are fairly far away, but the River does have a
social community of its own. You can live on-campus for all four years,
or you can live in a Greek house, or off-campus (which is so close to
campus it feels like on-campus housing). There are also on-campus
apartments, called Maxwell, that are quite nice, and managed by the
College. Dining Services has decent quality, Home Plate and the Food
Court being the most popular dining destinations. These eateries have a
declining balance program where you pay for what you eat, not a fixed
price. This is good, because it doesn't limit your consumption at off-
times. Off-campus eating options are plentiful for a small town. You
have all your staples -- Chinese, sushi, pizza, bar food, coffee shops,
a bakery, ice cream, etc. EBAs is a pizza shop that delivers until 2
a.m., that is frequented by most. Safety is not an issue. Aside from
the highly-publicized murders of two professors by local high schoolers
in 2000, there have been no incidents I can remember other than
occasional drug charges or hate graffiti-type incidents. Doors are left
unlocked, and Safety and Security has a high presence on-campus.
Dartmouth's Outing Club has orientation trips that are popular, and the
extracurricular offerings are in every area you can imagine.
