Quality of Life Survey |

The quality of life at Dartmouth is amazingly wonderful. I begin to
describe how much I love that place. New Hampshire is a gorgeous state,
and Hanover is a fabulous, quaint, surprisingly cultured little town.
There are a number of good restaurants in town, and even more within a
half-hour driving radius. Grocery stores carry all types of exotic
cheeses, organic vegetables, and international fare. For nature-lovers,
there is a wonderful running trail through the woods and along the
river. Kayaking and canoeing are available at the boathouse.
Additionally, Dartmouth has its own skiway that is frequently enjoyed
by towns and gowns alike.
Housing is a bit of a crunch. Most students live on-campus, and most
dorms are really beautiful old buildings. The river dorms are the
exception to this. An architectual disaster from the 70's, they are now
touted to freshman as a great experience of "all freshman housing."
This is a brilliant but slightly mean trick, since freshman don't know
any better. Avoid them if you can - they are ugly, short on windows,
and far from campus. If you do get stuck there, I hear it is a great
bonding experience with your hallmates. Off-campus housing can be a
great experience, too, especially with 5 of your buds to split rent. In
either case, safety is not a concern in this Rockwell-esque town. I
never, ever felt unsafe in Hanover - and this was before the dorms even
had locks on the main doors.
School facilities are great. The school is really working to maintain
the good buildings and improve ones that need help. This means that you
will have to tolerate some construction, but it is worth it.
