Admissions at Dartmouth, like admissions at any ivy is TOUGH. Above
average (if not stellar) SATs and teacher recommendations are
necessary, plus a high-achieving, well-rounded academic record. The
application is extensive (parts one and two) with several essays,
teacher recs, and a peer recommendation, not common among college
applications. Clear and vibrant essay writing is a necessity--
something they practically require. However, Dartmouth does not admit
students just on their intellectual capacity alone. Because the
school's in the middle of New Hampshire, the admissions teams knows
that in choosing the class, they choose the community at Dartmouth for
four years. So, they choose students with varied interests and many of
my classmates were not only saludatorian of their high school class but
were nationally ranked sailors or rode horses around the country,
fenced or played two sports and sang in the choir. Admissions is
looking for people who have excelled outside the classroom and who will
contribute to the college community while they're there.
