First off, if you're applying to the top 10: high GPA, solid SAT scores,
and meaningful extracurricular activities are a given. Outside of that,
strong essays and good interviews seem to be important with these
folks. Take every essay question seriously, and use it to describe you
and how you relate to Dartmouth. Dartmouth, in case you didn't have
time to visit, is very much outdoorsy. There is a popular Outing Club
trip that all incoming Freshman are strongly recommended to attend.
Dartmouth is also fairly politics and economics heavy. In addition, the
school is working on building up their centers of research. So if these
are your strong suits, it wouldn't hurt to bring them up in the essay.
When I was interviewed, I had two people interview me simultaneously.
Be prepared for nerve-racking interviews, always practice with your
parents or someone who knows you (and isn't afraid to be critical)
before going out on an interview.
