The admissions process for Dartmouth College is undoubtedly rigorous.
That being said, there are certain attributes that the admissions staff
seems to zone in on. For example, Dartmouth prides itself on being a
very unique place -- a school with thriving school spirit, outstanding
quality of life, students with an appreciation of nature and the
outdoors, and a committment to the liberal arts education. Early
decision is even more important at Dartmouth than at other schools,
because the administration actively seeks students who value the
uniqueness of Dartmouth and are not just applying as one of a laundry
list of Ivy League and top-tier institutions. On the same note, legacy
is important, since the alumni base is so strong. If you look
Dartmouth's endowment relative to other top schools, there isn't the
same volume of funds coming in because of the size of the school,
however, percentage of alumni giving donations is exceptionally high.
When you apply, you want to convey in your essays and application that
you understand what Dartmouth has to offer specifically, and why you
would be a good match for the school. Dartmouth seeks a certain type of
candidate. This is not limited to grades and test scores, but also
includes a committment to a stellar academic environment within a very
special environment.
