Cornellians work hard and play hard. There is a pretty decent bar-scene
in collegetown (walkable from campus)with bars for every 'scene' and
even a few that the under-21 crowd can sneak into. Most freshman,
however, will frequent fraternity parties (although they're constantly
changing the 'rules' of parties, they will always manage to draw a crowd
and provide music and beer). For those who aren't into the bar or party
scene, there is always some type of movie, a capella concert, improv
show, or theatre event going on. Some students will just congregate at
the bagel store or coffee house in collegetown and hang out and listen
to music. During fall and spring days, Ithaca is a playground for the
outdoor enthusiast. The Plantations on campus are a great place to relax
and get some peace and quiet, and then there are waterfalls and gorges
off campus to hike around or swim in. In the Fall, take a short drive to
go apple picking or pumpkin picking and see the leaves change color
(GORGEOUS). In the Spring get a bunch of friends togehter, rent a bus or
a van and go on a wine tour around the nearby Finger Lakes.
Greek life is popular, with almost one third of the students joining.
It's a great way to meet people and get involved with the community, but
it's not a nessecity. There are groups for every interest on campus from
political to artistic, for future CEO's to community volunteer groups.
For those into sports, Hockey is the sport of choice, and even non-
hockey fans will find themselves attending at least 1 game. Football
isn't too big aside from Homecoming, but at the end of the first home
game freshman storm the field and after the last game, senior storm the
field, which is always a good time. Softball, soccer, and lacrosse have
had pretty good teams in the recent past and are worth checking out. Go
Big Red!
