Even though academics are tough, Cornellians know how to party!! Every
weekend, and most weeknights, if you're looking to go out there are
opportunities. When you're a freshman, the fraternity parties are the
norm for freshman eager to jump into the college scene. They get old
fairly quickly and after establishing your set of friends, you figure
out alternatives. The Greek System was more prominent on campus than I
had expected. I was definitely in the minority by not joining, but I had
a very active social life and was friends with a lot of people in the
greek system. I didn't think it held me back at all.
Ithaca has a lot of cultural events in town as well and there's always
something interesting going on on Campus as well! It's a worldly place
and there are amazing opportunities to see visiting speakers (John
Cleese, Janet Reno came when I was there). By Senior year, most people
frequent the Collegetown bars because now you're legal and can get into
the "Real Bars" like the Palms or The Chapter House, which is a favorite
of grad students.
The dating scene was much like the outside world. People randomly hook-
up and people also have serious boyfriends and girlfriends. It's really
up to the individual, but I must say it's tough to go on dates without a
car because there are only so many restaraunts in Collegetown and most
turn into bars around 10pm.
Cornell's social life is part of the overall experience and it's
whatever you want it to be. It really makes all the work worthwhile -
there's nothing like studying for a big exam and going out afterwards
with a bunch of friends and blowing off steam - however you do it!
