Cornell is a huge campus with tremendous facilities. All freshman live
in dorms in one area of campus, rooms range from larger suites, to
smaller doubles and singles, but everyone gets by. Dorms are all set up
for ethernet access. You can request a specific roommate(s) if you know
someone you want to live with or let the school choose one for you. If
you are having an awful roomate/dorm experience, it is possible to
switch rooms, floors, or dorms. All freshman are guaranteed housing,
after that it gets a little crazy. There are dorms on West Campus (used
to be a mix of freshman and sophs but now is pretty much for non-
freshman) and some off-campus dorms. If you want to live in dorm after
your freshman year, there is a lotter that you must enter sometime in
the spring. You can pull a roomate in with you and the higher your
number, the better your choice of dorms. Many students choose to live in
their sorority or fraternity house Sophmore year, and there is a
plethora of off-campus apts and houses (in collegetown, some closer to
parts of campus than the dorms) that others choose to live in w/ groups
of friends. After freshman year, the hunt for an off-campus apt gets
crazy, as people start signing leases in Oct or Nov of the year before!
There are many dining facilities througout campus, and the food is very
good. You have many choices of dining plans, where you get a certain
amount of meals a day or week, or you just have money put onto your card
and can eat at any dining hall. Some are a la carte, others are all you
can eat in one sitting (but don't steal the fruit!). You can pretty much
get anything you want to eat somewhere on campus! Collegtown (the
streets right off of campus) has tons of restaurants (from pizza to thai)
as well, and downtown ithaca has even more restaurants, ranging from
bagels to upscale italian and steakhouses). You will never go hungry in
Ithaca! Campus is relatively safe at night, although it is recommended
not to walk around alone too late. There are volunteer campus security
guards (students) who you can call to escort you to your destination.
Collegetown is always bustling until around 2:30 am and although there
are small areas of Ithaca that may be less than desirable, you really
have no need to visit them throughout your 4 years!
Expect to do a lot of walking at Cornell as classes can be 15 - 20
minutes away from each other or from your dorm/apt/house. If you live on
West campus, beware of the slope, which can be a huge deterrent to going
to class, but you will have killer legs at the end of the year! There
are buses that run pretty frequently during the day for those who can't
deal with the walk.
