If you choose to apply early decision, you essentially commit to
attending the school if you are accepted. I can't recall the exact
deadlines, but I believe you are notified of acceptance by December.
You must pick a school and a major upon applying, and if you are a New
York resident, it is highly recommended that you apply to one of the 3
state funded schools - Agriculture and Life Science, Human Ecology, or
Industrial and Labor Relations. There is some talk that certain schools
and majors might be easier to get into than others. Hotel Administration
is probably one of the most selective and I know many people who have
been accepted into other schools and than transferred into the Hotel
school. Your major is not set in stone, it is pretty easy to change, and
changing schools, while not always so easy, is definately possible.
Certain schools may have formal interviews, but applying to the Ag
school, I only had an informal interview with an alumni in my hometown.
You are required to write two essays, but you have a few topics to
choose from, and they are usually having to do with personal
experiences. While academics and test scores are important, Cornell
likes to see extracurricular activities (something you are committed to,
not just one semester in a 'club.' You don't have to be the president of
everything, but a few activities and a few recommendations can go a long
way. I know many people who were rejected with better grades and more
impressive coursework than me, but I had a recommendation from my
Varsity Softball coach and a letter from a Board of Education member
who's child I tutored. These go a long way. If you don't get accepted
right way, all is not lost - many people are accepted as 'J-Frosh' which
means you are accepted to become a full time student in January. You can
choose to begin your education at another school and transfer your
credits, or you can come to Cornell in the Fall, live in student housing
(probably with other J-Frosh) and take up to 11 credits, which will
count towards your degree.
