Social Life Survey |
| Full Time |
The social life at Colgate has a unique, and dying, flavor to it. It
has historically been controlled by the deeply-rooted
fraternity/sorority system. However, over the past several years, the
administration has tried hard to curtail the power of fraternities and
change the way students socialize altogether due to a variety of
negative incidents that fraternities were responsible for- including
hazing, and the deaths of four students in a drunk-driving accident in
November 2001. Very few students "date" on campus, as there is few
places to go out except for frat parties, and the culture does not
promote relationships. Upperclassmen hang out at the "Bacon" (i.e.,
Risky Business) and The Glass, two of the three bars in the entire town
of Hamilton, NY. The third bar, called "The Jug", is dominated by
underclassmen but also some upperclassmen, and is stuffed to the point
of bursting on friday and saturday nights. Colgate used to have a
reputation as one of the best caliber "party schools", but this is all
but dead due to the efforts of administrators to eliminate fraternities
and greek life in general. People still have fun here- its just a
little harder to make and not as wild as it used to be- a turn that is
changing the flavor of the entire school and attracting a different
type of student for future classes.
